In the late 1960s, Camaro buyers faced a factory-imposed 396 CI limit, a built-in handicap for any stoplight grand prix player having to face competition that packed up to 440 cubes; but, in 1967, Chevrolet dealer and racer Don Yenko of Canonsburg, Pennsylvania, began swapping L72 427/425 HP big-block V-8 engines into new SS396 Camaros, creating the fearsome Yenko Super Camaro. Yenko stopped producing the Super Camaro after 1969, but so enduring was the legend surrounding that first generation that, in 2017, long-time GM contractor and builder Specialty Vehicle Engineering of New Jersey introduced the second generation Super Camaro with Chevrolet’s full participation and approval.
Offered at just 165 miles and distinctively draped in deep Mosaic Black paint with white hood and side graphics, this 2017 Chevrolet Yenko Super Camaro is No. 42 of only 50 produced. Building on the original, this new Yenko Super Camaro is capable of shocking performance. The new version is based on a stock Camaro SS equipped with the LT1 engine, magnetorheological ride control suspension, Brembo disc brakes, differential oil cooler and, in this case, a paddle-shifted 8-speed automatic transmission. With most of the modifications performed under the hood, the Yenko Camaro’s chassis is largely unchanged with the exception of white Yenko-badged brake calipers and Michelin Pilot Sport radials on 20-inch gunmetal finish 5-spoke wheels with “sYc” center caps. The interior features a special Yenko trim package, including a numbered dash plaque and houndstooth seat inserts. Beneath the carbon fiber hood is a custom-built 6.8L version of the LT1 aluminum small-block packing a forged 4340 steel crankshaft and H-beam rods, forged aluminum pistons, CNC-ported LT4 cylinder heads, an upgraded fuel system and injectors, and custom stainless long-tube headers and exhaust. A custom-spec SVE-designed Rootes supercharger with optional white finish tops it all off, bringing the LT1’s output to 800 HP and elevating the Super Camaro moniker to new heights of performance. |
